Resumen
El tema central de este artículo se refiere a la modificación de una regla electoral en Chile. Nuestro objetivo principal es determinar en qué medida, el cambio desde el voto obligatorio al voto voluntario, afectó la participación y la distribución de las preferencias de los votantes en las elecciones de diputados entre 1993 y 2013. A través del análisis de datos electorales, veremos que los efectos causados por el cambio de esta regla son dispares, por un lado la participación disminuyó y por otro, la distribución de las preferencias electorales se mantuvo casi igual en ambos períodos.

Abstract
The central theme of this article deals with the change of an electoral rule in Chile. Our main aim is determine to what extent, the change from compulsory voting to voluntary voting, has affected the turnout and the distribution of voter preferences in the deputies elections between 1993 and 2013. Through the analysis of electoral data, we shall see that the effects caused by the change of this rule are disparate, on the one hand the turnout decreased, and in the other, the distribution of voter preferences is almost the same in both periods.
